PSСL About

PlacentaStemCell laboratory is a scientific unit in the Institute of Cell Therapy in Kyiv, Ukraine. We study mesenchymal and hematopoietic stem cells from human placenta and focus on the research of their ontological origin, heterogeneity, molecular and therapeutic properties. Special attention is paid to the developing technologies of placenta-cell based clinical products manufactured according to cGMP guidance.

Regarding these, we study the optimal methods of cell isolation, culturing and cryopreservation of various populations of placental stem cells. We developed several controlled rate freezing protocols for low-temperature preservation of hematopoietic stem cells (cord blood), mesenchymal stem cells, chondrocytes, amniotic membrane, umbilical cord, and placental tissues.

On the base of PlacentaStemCell laboratory protocols, ATMPs Manufacturing Unit of Institute of Cell Therapy launched the manufacture of clinical grade Placenta-derived MSCs which is being developed in clinical trials for Cardiomyopathy, Diabetic foot, Liver cirrhosis and Osteoarthritis.

Along with biotechnological directions, we interested in studying of the role of endogenous retrovirus ENV genes in the placental mesenchymal cells. In order to investigate the early stages of the development of the extraembryonic mesoderm as a precursor to mesenchymal placental cells, we chose chicken embryo model and investigate the role of expression of endogenous retroviral ENV genes on chick extraembryonic membranes development.
