Institute of Cell Therapy is a high-tech center that combines Cryobank, Medical and Research Centers. Providing high-quality world-class services for banking of different origin stem cells, manufacturing cellular and tissue products and their clinical application requires constant updating of technologies, application of innovations and carrying out of both applied and fundamental studies. Therefore, the Research Center, which includes the R&D Center and the PlacentaStemCell Laboratory, successfully operates at the Institute of Cell Therapy. History

R&D Center is created from the research unit at Cryobank of Institute of Cell Therapy. The founder and director of the first in Ukraine Сryobank of cord blood stem cells are Galyna Lobintseva, Ph.D. in biology, laureate of the state premium. From 1972 to 1996 she held the position of a Group Leader in the Low-temperature cryopreservation laboratory in the Kharkiv Research Institute of Cryobiology and Cryomedicine of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. She brought to the Сryobank and R&D Center her experience in cryobiology, human fetal liver stem cells cryopreservation, viability assessment, and cultivation ex vivo. She is the author of more than 150 scientific articles on cryopreservation of human fetal liver, ovarian tissue, testes, amnion tissue, placenta, and various stem cell populations. The first clinical trials in the USSR on cell therapy were conducted in Ukraine under the guidance of Dr. Galyna Lobintseva

Dr. Galyna Lobintseva, Ph.D., is a director and a founder the first in Ukraine cryobank of umbilical cord blood stem cells, Laureate of the State Prize of Ukraine. She has been engaged in the development of methods for cryopreservation of hematopoietic cells of animals and humans and blood cells since 1972 (she has 28 patents, 3 monographs, 152 scientific publications). Based on generalization and analysis of theoretical information on mechanisms of action of cryoprotectants, freezing rates and other factors related to the temperature gradients in solutions she proposed a new approach to improve methods of cryopreservation by means of mathematical planning and processing of experimental results. This allowed to obtain interesting data on the interaction of cryopreservation parameters and their influence on the result of the freezing. In addition to the uncontested theoretical value, it made a significant contribution to practical cryobiology. As a result of these studies, there was developed a patented technology for obtaining and cryopreservation of hematopoietic stem cell created stem cell products which were applied in pre-clinical studies (in piglets, rabbits, and calves) and clinical trials five clinics in Ukraine, and since 1991 have been authorized for clinical application in Ukraine
